2009 Waveland - Junior State Champions
The 2009 Junior State Champions were crowned June 27 th at Waveland. Tyler Pendygraft and Brody McWilliams won their respective age groups to claim the titles.
The BASS National Youth Tournament Trail had their third tournament of the year on May 16, 2009 at Lake Lemon. The weather was fair with cloudy skies all day with a few pop up showers, but that didn't stop the fish from biting. There were a total of 27 fish caught and those 27 fish had an accumulative weight of 60.87 lbs.
First place went to Brett Rounsaville with a three fish limit that tipped the scales at 10.05 lbs. Brett caught his fish shallow in the morning and then pulled out to about ten feet of water to catch them later in the day. Brett caught his fish flipping a tube to brush in the morning and then switching to a shaky head worm rig later in the day around submerged stumps. Second place went to Brody McWilliams that also had three fish for a total weight of 6.05 lbs. Brody caught his fish on main lake points using a stupid tube rig.
Third place went to Nate Sanders also with a three fish limit. His three fish were good enough for 5.40 lbs.
Fourth place went to Tyler Pendygraft. Tyler, the points leader in the 15 - 18 age group, had three fish for a total of 4.97 lbs.
Rounding out the top five was Garrick Straber with two fish for a total of 4.60 lbs. Garrick Straber is new to the tournament circuit this year and is pulling his weight for a newcomer to the sport. Garrick also fishes the Fishers of Men Tournament Trail with his dad Gary. Ryan Snyder had big bass for the tournament. His bass weighed 4.12 lbs.
This tournament definitely set the stage for the final tournament on June 27, 2009 at Waveland Reservoir, which also determines our two Indiana state champions for this year. These two lucky individuals will then advance to the regional championship with the Indiana state team, and compete in that regional tournament as a part of the Indiana state team. The 15 - 18 year old age group is only separated by sixteen points and will come down to Waveland. As for the younger age group, it can almost already be called to a close. Brody McWilliams overtook Austin Ayers in this past tournament which makes him the leader by sixty two points. Austin has his work cut out for him as he tries to regain his lead and the state championship for the 2009 season. Read next month's issue to see what happened at Waveland and who was declared our two youth state champions for the year.
The 2010 Indiana BASS Federation Nation Youth Tournament Trail
Thank you for another great tournament. With tough conditions 57% of the field weighed fish. Our trail has a lot to be proud of for this performance. This was not an easy day to keep focus and catch fish. Great Job to all.
While I have your attention - the Fishers of Men will be having a Legacy (Youth Adult) tournament at Waveland on 5/22. I am the division director this year and would love to see all of you. If you have questions check our web site at FOMNTT.com or drop me a note. $75 entry fee per team. You know there will be a lot of fish caught and we will have a great time.
Also wanted to pass on some feedback from those observing our tournaments. Here are a few quotes:
" This is a great group of kids
" They are respectful of the parents
" They are clean cut young men
" They catch'em when others don't
To all the young men on our tour - thank you. If you don't realize our sport is facing many challenges with access to public waters and our environmental systems continue to be challenged (Gulf oil spill for a great example). You are the young men that will be challenged to keep our systems available to the public, clean, and available to fish. I'm confident our sport will be well kept by this group of young men.
Results
Our 11-14 age group continues to play a big part in the tournament outcome. Great to see a win by our younger age group.
