IBFN State Team Competes in B.A.S.S Northern Divisional
Dave Watson of the Strip Pit Basser's advances to the Federation Nation Championship

Escanaba, Michigan - The 12 man Indiana State team traveled to Little Bay De Noc in Escanaba, Michigan for the B.A.S.S Northern Divisional. Little Bay de Noc is quickly becoming one of the finest smallmouth fisheries in the country as witnessed by the Indiana team members. Brad Stogsdill one of the boaters on the team, pulled up on a shoal while practicing with Dave Hedge, said "there were so many smallmouth you didn't know where to cast first, and they  scattered like ants there were just so many fish, which is nothing like were used to in Indiana".

The team got off to a rocky start by being penalized prior to the event that left them twelve pounds in the hole before the first line was cast in competition. The team quickly bounced back on day one with several limits weighed in. Dave Hedge lead the team and sat tenth overall with his first days catch of twenty pounds fourteen ounces. After penalties he had to settle with a final day 1 weight of eighteen pounds fourteen ounces.

Day two started with nearly perfect weather conditions as the competitors headed out into Little Bay de Noc. This time with no penalties being assessed at weigh in, the angler's again brought in limits of bass with Hedge moving up to second place overall with a total weight of thirty seven pounds eleven ounces.. And the Indiana team moving up to fifth place with a combined weight of three hundred six pounds and nine ounces.

.
Day three brought a different scenario. It was the Junior State Champions Brody McWilliams and Ryan Mikels turn at competition. But, with the wind blowing at 20 mph on the final day BASS tournament director Jon Stewart made a decision to limit the adult anglers to the Bay area and have the juniors fish inside the harbor due to unsafe conditions. The adult team went out with disappointing results as only half of the team brought in bass to the scales. Dave Watson of the Strip Pit Bassers brought in the only limit for the Indiana team, which propelled him into the team lead and advanced to the Federation Nation Championship. Dave had a combined three day total of forty two pounds ten ounces. Good enough for fifth place overall. Junior state champ Ryan Mikels brought in the only bass caught by the IBFN jr. team.

All in all this team proved through adversity you can take a group of complete strangers, and bring them together as a team. The IBFN is proud of the way the 2010 State team represented Indiana.

Indiana's Dave Watson Qualifies for the 2011 Bassmasters Classic !

BFN CHAMPIONSHIP

Federation Nation - Shreveport, LA - Dave Watson never imagined an old country boy from Dugger, Indiana like himself could ever qualify for the Bassmasters Classic, But that's exactly what he has accomplished, and will be competing in February, against the worlds best anglers. After edging the Northern Division field with a  three day accumulative weight of 16 lbs.10 oz. and becoming one of six from the BFNC to advance to the Classic. Idaho's Brian Palaniuk won the three day event with 29 - 09

Finishing eighteenth overall, Edges out all other Northern Division competitors with 16-10
Dave Watson (Northern Division Champion - 18th overall - 16 -10)
Dave said he found most of his fish by locking through to an area called the "Jungle" there he would target small cuts in the many slough's the Red River has to offer but most importantly he would have an area all to himself, he said "nobody else was doing what I was doing, after locking through I didn't have much time to fish so I had to make the best of it" at times he said he would have to run on plane over a half mile through a foot of water to get to an area. He said he would cover an area first with a spinnerbait and then go back and clean up with either a tube or a jig. The first day he weighed in only two bass for a total of 4 pounds 2 ounces but he rallied back on day two with a limit of Red River bass weighing 7 pounds one ounce and only 14 ounces out of first in the Northern Division behind Italy's Alessio Telese.

The last and final day of the tournament found him locking through to his area for the final time. Dave caught only three bass the final day and knew he had blown his shot at making the Classic. But fate was on his side as Telese only had two bass that would go 2 pounds  6 ounces giving him a three day total of 14 pounds 6 ounces. Nathan Ranallo of La Crosse, Wis. finished second in the Northern Division with a total weight of 15 - 03. This will be Watson's first trip to the Bassmasters Classic.

With the BFNC wrapping up this weekend the Classic field is now set. The Classic will be held on the Louisana Delta in New Orleans, La. February 18 - 20, 2011
